JamRok Bar and Event Centre has taken legal action against Ghanaian artiste Andrew Nii Commey Otoo, popularly known as Mr. Drew, for failing to perform at their highly anticipated event, ‘Easter Dance Party with Mr. Drew,’ scheduled for Monday, April 1, 2024, in Asuogyaman.
According to the organizers, Mr. Drew backed out of the event despite receiving 50% of the performance fee beforehand. In a press statement dated April 2, 2024, JamRok’s management expressed disappointment, stating that all arrangements were in place for the event until Mr. Drew unexpectedly withdrew from his commitment without providing any reasons or explanations.
The statement revealed that Mr. Drew had even confirmed his participation in the event through a video upon receiving his payment. However, on the day of the event, while other artists on the bill had already arrived and were prepared to perform, Mr. Drew and his team checked into their hotel around 3 pm and remained out of contact until approximately 12:30 am when organizers attempted to reach them. Despite repeated calls, there was no response until they eventually found Mr. Drew and his team asleep in their hotel room. Shortly after being awakened, Mr. Drew and his team reportedly left the hotel and drove past the event grounds without performing, heading back to Accra instead.
In response to Mr. Drew’s failure to fulfill his contractual obligations, JamRok Bar and Event Centre filed a writ of summons at the District Magistrate Court – Senchi on April 15, 2024. The suit seeks the recovery of GH₵15,000.00, representing the amount paid to Mr. Drew for his performance, as well as GH₵36,511.00 in special damages incurred by the plaintiff in connection with the event. Additionally, the suit requests general damages of GH₵200,000.00, citing the severe damage caused to JamRok’s brand reputation due to the cancellation of the event.
The legal action underscores the seriousness with which event organizers are addressing breaches of contracts by performers, highlighting the importance of upholding professional commitments in the entertainment industry.
