More than 50,000 teachers in Ghana have been promoted after passing last year’s promotion test, the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has announced.
In a statement, GNAT said that 50,458 out of 54,227 teachers who passed the 2024 aptitude test have been placed on their new grades as of April 2025. The remaining teachers, along with some from the 2023 batch, will be promoted by May 2025.
GNAT also confirmed that 1,417 teachers, who were previously removed from the payroll, have had their salaries restored. Only 162 cases are still pending.
The announcement followed a meeting between GNAT and the Ghana Education Service (GES) on April 25, 2025. GNAT added that promotions for teachers in lower ranks would also be completed in May after all regions submitted the necessary data.
For teachers who returned from further studies, GNAT said many had not yet been upgraded since 2023. However, GES has promised to complete all upgrades by the end of May 2025.
GNAT praised the government for working to address the teachers’ concerns. A stakeholders meeting will be held in May to set the date for the next promotion test. Issues like salary differences under the Single Spine Pay Structure are also expected to be resolved.
GNAT thanked President John Mahama for approving a 20% allowance for teachers working in deprived areas and for making changes that will make it easier for Deputy Directors to get promoted.
They also applauded the President for providing sanitary pads to female students and pledged to continue pushing for better conditions for teachers.
GNAT’s General Secretary, Thomas Musah, described the progress as a major breakthrough and thanked the government for its cooperation.
Previously, GNAT had given the government until April 30, 2025, to address various concerns, including salary delays and the lack of a clear career path for teachers. These demands followed a nationwide strike by teacher unions last year.
