President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has relieved John Ofori-Tenkorang of his duties as the Director-General of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT). The decision, communicated via a letter dated April 8, 2024, signed by the Secretary to the President, Nana Bediatuo Asante, outlined the termination of Ofori-Tenkorang’s appointment effective April 15, 2024.
The letter cited paragraph 8 of Ofori-Tenkorang’s appointment letter issued by the Public Services Commission on July 1, 2019, as the basis for the termination. It further stated that the President has directed Ofori-Tenkorang to hand over his office to Kofi Bosompem Osafo-Maafo, with whom he will be replaced. Ofori-Tenkorang has been granted three months’ salary in lieu of notice and is instructed to collect any terminal benefits he may be entitled to.
“The President thanks you for your service to the nation and extends his best wishes,” the letter added
Observers are keen to understand the causes and implications of this leadership change within SSNIT, an institution crucial for social security and insurance in Ghana. Additionally, concerns have been raised about the transparency and accountability of such decisions, especially when they involve high-profile appointments.
