A secondary school teacher identified as Kevin Omwenga was discovered deceased on Thursday in what authorities suspect to be a case of suicide. Omwenga, a Chemistry and Mathematics educator at Nyamira Boys Secondary School in Nyamira, Kenya, was reportedly grappling with significant debts, purportedly stemming from his involvement in the Aviator betting game.

According to Area Assistant Chief Johnson Manyara, Omwenga had borrowed a substantial sum of money, approximately Ksh50,000 ($380), from fellow teachers, a debt he allegedly struggled to repay after sustaining losses in the popular betting game. Manyara remarked, “I have gathered from his colleagues that he borrowed a lot of money but lost most of it playing the Aviator game.”

Nyamira Boys School principal, George Onkundi, highlighted that Omwenga had been teaching at the institution for the past four years without formal employment under the Teachers Service Commission (TSC). Despite this, Onkundi noted that Omwenga did not exhibit any discernible signs of distress leading up to the tragic incident. Omwenga was last seen near the school on Wednesday but failed to report to work, prompting concern among his colleagues.

The alarm was raised when attempts to reach Omwenga via phone proved unsuccessful, prompting several teachers to visit his residence. Upon arrival, they discovered the teacher’s lifeless body hanging inside his home after peering through a window. Authorities, including the police and the area assistant chief, were swiftly notified and dispatched to the scene.

Omwenga’s wife and their one-year-old child were reportedly away visiting his ailing mother in the village at the time of the incident, adding to the tragedy of the situation. The deceased’s body was subsequently transported to Nyamira Referral Hospital for further examination and processing.

The devastating loss of Kevin Omwenga serves as a sobering reminder of the potential consequences of gambling addiction and the importance of mental health awareness and support within communities, particularly among vulnerable populations. As investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death continue, colleagues, friends, and family members mourn the untimely passing of a dedicated educator.
