A security guard identified as Uche tragically lost his life in the Rumaholu community of Rivers State after slipping into a diesel tank at a telecommunications facility, where he worked. The incident, which occurred on Saturday night, has shocked the local community.
According to reports, Uche was allegedly attempting to steal diesel from the company’s tank when he accidentally fell into it and drowned. Community residents, who last saw him on the night of the incident, became concerned after Uche failed to return home the next day. A search ensued, and his lifeless body was discovered early on Monday, September 23, 2024.
Eyewitnesses suggest that Uche had removed his clothes and slippers before the incident. A resident, who wished to remain anonymous, shared details of the grim discovery. “When I came to the shop this morning, a brother of the landlord told me that Uche was trying to steal diesel from the place on Saturday night. They don’t know how it happened, but he fell inside the tank.”
The resident further explained how the search led to the discovery of Uche’s body: “They couldn’t find him throughout Sunday, so they came to the facility where he worked. They saw the facility’s gate was left open, as well as the security house. His clothes and slippers were near the tank, which was also open.”
Following the discovery, Uche’s family, along with representatives from the telecommunications company, filed a formal report with local authorities. However, efforts to reach the Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Grace Iringe-Koko, for an official comment were unsuccessful, as her phone was unreachable at the time of this report.
The tragic incident has left the community in shock, as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding Uche’s death.
