Scores of students of Tamale Technical University have sustained various degrees of injuries following violent clashes with the police during a protest on campus.
The students had hit the streets on Tuesday to register their displeasure over what they describe as the management’s neglect, misappropriation and mismanagement of the school’s funds, as well as an unjustified increment in fees.
What began as a peaceful demonstration quickly escalated into chaos when the police attempted to disperse the crowd.
In a video circulating on Facebook, posted by TV3 News and sighted by Sixscribes.com, students and police armored cars were seen extinguishing fire, while police officers were also captured calming the protesters down.
Several injured students were rushed to nearby health facilities, though the exact number of casualties has not yet been confirmed.
Authorities of the university are yet to officially respond to the students’ allegations, while police have maintained that their intervention was necessary to restore calm.
More details will be provided as the story develops.
