According to reports by Graphic Online, a KIA truck plowed into hawkers and Christmas shoppers at the Cocoa Marketing Board (CMB) market near the Accra Brewery Limited (ABL). The tragic event resulted in one fatality and left three individuals injured, with graphic scenes of the aftermath captured on video.
The deceased, identified as a hawker in the area, suffered fatal head injuries in the collision. Graphic images from the scene depicted the somber sight of the victim lying on the ground, covered with a cloth.
Among the injured, one woman faced a particularly severe situation, with her intestines exposed due to the impact. The three injured persons were swiftly transported to the hospital for urgent medical attention.
The accident, which occurred around 1:30 pm, was reportedly caused by brake failure on the KIA truck with registration GC 334-09. The vehicle, loaded with bags of sugar destined for the market, lost control and plowed into shoppers and hawkers, creating chaos and exacerbating the already busy vehicular traffic on the Graphic Road.
Eyewitness accounts, such as that of Akua Serwaa, indicated that the truck driver attempted to navigate a narrow space to avoid traffic at the junction in front of the Accra Brewery entrance. Unfortunately, the brakes failed during this maneuver, resulting in the tragic collision with the hawker who lost their life.
The emotional impact of the incident was evident as hawkers and sellers who knew the deceased person mourned the tragic loss. The chaotic scene made it challenging for police personnel, who had arrived at the location, to carry out their duties efficiently.
As investigations unfold, the incident serves as a grim reminder of the risks associated with vehicular traffic and the importance of safety measures, especially during busy festive periods.
