The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially released the provisional results for candidates who participated in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for both School and Private Candidates in 2023. The examination was conducted at 2,137 centers nationwide, with 3,366 candidates marked as absent.
The BECE for Private Candidates recorded an entry figure of 1,839 candidates, consisting of 942 males and 897 females. The examination was administered in fifteen centers, primarily located in the regional capitals. Out of the total private candidates, 61 were marked as absent.
Examination Malpractices
The Council has completed investigations into cases of irregularities detected during the examination and marking of scripts. As a result, the 34th Meeting of the Final Awards and Examiners’ Appointment Committee for BECE, held on November 6th, 2023, approved the following actions:
1. Cancellation of Subject Results for 312 school candidates and 3 private candidates for bringing unauthorized materials, including prepared notes, textbooks, and printed materials, into the examination hall or colluding with other candidates.
2. Cancellation of Entire Results for 41 school candidates and 1 private candidate for the possession of mobile phones in the examination hall.
3. Withholding of Subject Results for 180 school candidates and 4 private candidates for various suspected offenses.
4. Withholding of Entire Results for 110 school candidates and 2 private candidates for various suspected offenses.
Furthermore, the scripts of 22,270 candidates in specific subjects are currently under scrutiny for reported cases of mass cheating. Their results may be either cancelled or released based on the outcome of further investigations.

The Council urges all stakeholders to be vigilant of fraudulent individuals who offer result upgrades for a fee. Candidates are reminded that WAEC results are secure and can be authenticated.
