The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has confirmed the tragic death of an 8-year-old girl after a fierce fire swept through the Dansoman Market in Accra in the early hours of Wednesday, November 26, 2025.
According to the Service, the young girl was trapped in one of the affected sections of the market and could not be rescued as the flames spread rapidly. Her severely burnt body has since been handed over to the police for preservation and further investigation.
In its final update on the incident, the GNFS reported that it received a distress call at 00:02 hrs, prompting an immediate response from the Dansoman Fire Station, which arrived on the scene just two minutes later. Firefighters were met with a raging blaze that had already engulfed large portions of the market.
Realising the gravity of the situation, the crew called for reinforcement. A total of eight fire engineswere dispatched from the Industrial Area, Ministries, National Headquarters, Madina, Weija, Anyaa, and Accra City fire stations. They were supported by two private water tankers from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA).
Firefighters launched a coordinated and aggressive attack, successfully containing the fire at 01:51 hrsand bringing it under control by 03:03 hrs. Overhauling operations continued until the blaze was fully extinguished at 05:21 hrs.
The inferno left several wooden structures and shops completely destroyed, along with their contents. However, the swift and large-scale response prevented the flames from extending to adjoining properties, saving multiple structures from destruction.
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, as investigations are currently underway. Meanwhile, the Dansoman community has been left in shock and mourning following the heartbreaking loss of the young girl.
