Tragedy Strikes: Two Children Perish in Akyem Oda House Fire

A devastating fire outbreak in Akyem Oda has claimed the lives of two young children and left a family reeling from loss. The inferno, which engulfed their three-bedroom home last Sunday night, also resulted in injuries to three others and the destruction of property worth thousands of Ghana cedis.

The victims, identified as Clement Agyei, aged 6, and Desmond Karikari Agyei, aged 4, succumbed to the flames, while their mother, Bernice Karikari, a 36-year-old hairdresser, along with her two daughters, Ereka Gyekyewaa and Blessing Agyeiwaa, aged 14 and 9 respectively, managed to escape with varying degrees of injuries.

Authorities from the Oda Municipal Police Command, led by Chief Superintendent Daniel Amoako, have launched an investigation in collaboration with the Municipal Fire Service to determine the cause of the tragic incident.

Eyewitnesses recounted the harrowing moments of the blaze. Mary Brew, a neighbor, recalled hearing Ms. Karikari’s desperate cries for help while she was bathing around 11 p.m. Upon investigation, she discovered the victims’ home ablaze and raised the alarm, drawing assistance from the community.

Despite heroic efforts to douse the flames, the intensity of the fire and locked bedroom doors prevented immediate access to the trapped children. Ultimately, the arrival of the Ghana National Fire Service was too late to save Clement and Desmond, who were found burnt beyond recognition.

The surviving family members have been treated at the Oda Government Hospital, where Ms. Karikari and her daughters have been discharged, while the bodies of the deceased children have been placed in the hospital’s morgue.
