Ghanaian media personality Abena Moet has called for a shift in traditional household roles, urging men to take an active part in cooking, especially when their wives have demanding careers.
Speaking on GHOne’s Toast, Abena challenged the long-standing belief that the kitchen is solely a woman’s domain. She stressed that in a fair partnership, responsibilities should be shared, particularly when both partners contribute equally to the household.
She criticized the notion that some men refuse to cook simply because of their gender, stating that it is unfair for a hardworking woman to return home after a long day, only to be expected to prepare a meal while her husband remains idle.
“I can’t spend 12 to 15 hours working, negotiating business deals, and engaging in discussions, only to come home and find you sitting on the couch waiting for me to cook—just because you’re the man. That’s not right,” she remarked.
Abena acknowledged that situations differ when both partners have equally demanding careers and return home at the same time. However, she took issue with the mindset that cooking is always the woman’s duty, regardless of her workload or exhaustion.
She clarified that her argument is not about who earns more in a marriage but rather about fairness and shared responsibilities. She encouraged couples to break free from rigid gender roles and adopt a more balanced approach to household duties to ensure a healthy and equitable relationship.
