Government Pledges Nurse Recruitment and Training Allowances

The Ghanaian government under the leadership of Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has committed to recruiting a backlog of nurses and midwives by August this year. This announcement was made during the launch of the 2024 International Nurses Day celebration at the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) secretariat in Accra.

The Vice-President assured the public that the Finance Ministry is actively working to clear the backlog, with plans to grant clearance for recruitment by August. Dr Bawumia also pledged the release of GH¢177 million to the Ministry of Health to cover allowances for nursing trainees, demonstrating the government’s commitment to investing in the healthcare workforce.

Highlighting the significance of nurses and midwives, Dr Bawumia emphasized their indispensable role in healthcare delivery. He underscored the government’s efforts to support healthcare professionals, citing initiatives such as the One-constituency, One-ambulance program, the integration of medical drones, and digitalization to streamline healthcare services.

Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, President of GRNMA, stressed the need for policies that prioritize the well-being of nurses and midwives. Despite challenges such as low salaries and unemployment among recent graduates, nursing remains an attractive profession for Ghanaian youth. Ofori-Ampofo called for pension unification, improved benefits, and salary structure reviews to address these issues.

Echoing these sentiments, Associate Professor Stella Appiah of Valley View University advocated for strategic investments in nursing education and continuous professional development to meet future healthcare demands.

In his remarks, Minister of Health designate, Dr Bernard Okoe-Boye, commended nurses and midwives for their unwavering dedication, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The government’s commitment to addressing the needs of healthcare professionals and investing in nursing recruitment and training reflects a concerted effort to strengthen the healthcare system and improve health outcomes for all citizens.
