Initiative Aims to Transform Lives of Female Head Porters Through TVET and Socio-Economic Empowerment
Accra witnessed the launch of a groundbreaking initiative on Tuesday as Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia unveiled the ‘Kayayei’ Empowerment Programme. This initiative, designed to uplift 5000 female head porters, known locally as “kayayei,” is set to revolutionize their socio-economic status through Technical, Vocational Education, and Training (TVET).
The programme, inaugurated alongside the unveiling of two modern hostels in Madina and Ashaiman municipalities, aims to offer transitional job pathways and enhance the overall well-being of these resilient young women. Dr. Bawumia emphasized the meticulous planning behind the initiative, highlighting its holistic approach towards sustainable economic empowerment.
Under the programme, selected participants will undergo a three-week training period covering essential modules such as baking, beading, personal health care, financial management, and entrepreneurial skills. The newly established hostels, equipped with modern facilities, reflect the government’s commitment to safeguarding the dignity and well-being of all participants.
The success of the programme hinges on collaborative efforts between government agencies, private enterprises, and civil society organizations. Partnerships with entities such as the Ghana Enterprises Agency (GEA), National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), and Youth Employment Agency (YEA) underscore the collective commitment to the cause.
In his address, Dr. Bawumia reiterated the programme’s significance, citing the dire circumstances faced by over 100,000 head porters in the country. He emphasized the need for ongoing support post-training, including provision of starter packs tailored to facilitate their integration into new economic opportunities.
Moreover, plans are underway to expand the programme’s scope by offering driving and ICT training in collaboration with Metro Mass and Ayalolo. Such initiatives aim to broaden the horizons of participants and further enhance their skills and economic empowerment.
The launch event saw the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Titus Nii Kwartei Glover, applauding the government’s commitment to providing safe housing and skills training for kayayei. He stressed the importance of maintaining the facilities to ensure their continued effectiveness in serving the intended purpose.
Reflecting on the challenges faced by female head porters, Kofi Baah Agyapong, CEO of the Youth Employment Agency, highlighted the programme as a comprehensive response to address their urgent needs. He emphasized the significance of providing decent accommodation and vital skills to enable participants to secure dignified jobs and support their families.
