A Hong Kong court has sentenced a 26-year-old British woman, Isabel Rose, to six years in prison after finding her guilty of falsely accusing a British banker of rape and attempting to blackmail him.
The case dates back to early 2024 when Rose travelled to Hong Kong to visit the banker, whom she had met while on holiday in Thailand. She later reported to police that he had raped her, leading to his arrest. However, investigators later released the banker and charged Rose instead after finding evidence that she had demanded money from him.
According to the court, Rose initially asked for £5,000 and later demanded more than HK$1 million (about £100,000), threatening to report the man to police if he did not pay. She denied the allegations, insisting the money was meant to cover her expenses and medical costs.
Judge Adriana Noelle Tse Ching ruled that Rose had fabricated the rape allegation and convicted her of blackmail and perverting the course of justice. The judge also said Rose had shown no remorse before handing down the six-year prison sentence.
Rose has maintained that she was sexually assaulted, and her legal team is considering an appeal. The case has also sparked debate among campaigners over how courts assess the behaviour of alleged sexual assault victims.
