British actress Emaa Hussen, known for playing Naz in the EastEnders spin-off E20, has been charged in Australia over her alleged role in a large drug trafficking case linked to Ghana.
The 34-year-old appeared in a Sydney court on Thursday after being accused of trying to bring a large amount of methamphetamine (meth) into Australia. If found guilty, she could face life imprisonment.
Australian authorities say Hussen was part of a plan to import about 320 kilograms of meth hidden inside bags of charcoal shipped from Ghana. The drugs are estimated to be worth A$296 million on the streets.
Investigators started looking into the shipment in April after border officials found suspicious items in two containers that arrived at Sydney’s Port Botany. Further checks revealed a crystal-like substance hidden in the charcoal, which tested positive for methamphetamine.
Police claim Hussen visited the storage site where the containers were taken and oversaw the unloading of the bags before some were moved to another location. She was later arrested at a home in Blacktown, where officers seized electronic devices and documents linked to the investigation.
The case has also led to the arrest of a man and a woman from Adelaide. They are accused of using fake identities to rent storage facilities connected to the shipment.
Authorities say the seizure stopped millions of drug deals from reaching Australian communities. Hussen, who also appeared with Jason Statham in the 2013 film Hummingbird (Redemption), was denied bail and is expected to appear in court again in August.
