The Chief Imam of the Bole Traditional Area, Alhaji Mohammed Iddrisu, has officially placed a ban on extravagant Islamic weddings within his jurisdiction. This decision follows several council meetings with Islamic clergy and aims to ensure that wedding ceremonies align with Islamic principles.
According to the Chief Imam, the increasing trend of lavish wedding celebrations has introduced practices that place a heavy financial burden on families, making it difficult for many young people to marry. As a result, effective Wednesday, March 5, 2025, these extravagant practices will no longer be permitted.
The specific elements that have been identified as deviations from Islamic customs include:
1. Wedding receptions that feature multiple outfit changes by the couple.
2. Male beauticians dressing brides.
3. Record dances, commonly referred to as “jams.”
The Chief Imam emphasized that these practices are not rooted in Islamic tradition and often pressure families into unnecessary expenses. He called on the community, including local authorities and the general public, to support the enforcement of the ban to promote more modest and religiously appropriate wedding ceremonies.
The announcement has sparked discussions within the Muslim community in Bole, with many expressing support for the decision, while others debate the cultural and economic implications.
Alhaji Mohammed Iddrisu assured the public that this measure is intended to make marriage more accessible to young Muslims and to uphold the religious values of the community.
He concluded by urging all stakeholders to cooperate in ensuring the full implementation of the ban.
