An ex porn star, who earlier believed in stardom escaped it all to become a pastor after more than 5 years in action.
Growing up, Joshua Broome did not have a good connection with his father, so when he started modeling at age 15, he thrived on the praise and the positive reinforcement.
He thought, “If I am successful in any type of genre of a film or theater, I would be loved,” So with $50, he moved to Golden State, California, home to the film industry, maker of stars. His plan, of course, was to do something legitimate.
Earlier, Joshua Broome worked as a waiter at a steakhouse in LA but he had always desired to become a movie star. During his service as a waiter, he attracted ladies at his table who offered him a different kind of acting: “adult” movies. The women advised that a slot in the adult movie industry would increase his chances of becoming a movie star.
When he finally accepted to enter into the x-rated movies, Josh filmed more than 1,000 movies under the fictitious name Rocco Reed. However, in 2012, he quit the industry, claiming it caused him a “tremendous amount of emotional trauma.”
“I showed up (at the studio) and I was terrified, and everyone’s like, ‘Don’t worry about it. Just take this pill, you’ll be able to perform.’ I didn’t have a conversation with the girl. I didn’t know her name. We never even made eye contact. I felt dirty” – Josh Broome said in one of his numerous testimonies.
He added by telling the New York Post that, “I literally lost track of who I was. Everything was lies and fiction … I wanted to take my own life and didn’t have the guts to do so”.
He quickly became one of the most known male stars in the industry. However, his heart was not into the act.
“I believed the lie that if I made money I would be happy. I made well over a million dollars. I travelled everywhere I wanted to go. I had all the sex I could have ever imagined. But once I had it all, my life fell apart, because it amplified the sorrow and emptiness I always felt inside,” Broome told the outlet.
For the next two years after 2012, Broome tried to rebuild a life for himself. He began working at a gym and initially lied to everyone he met about his past. Eventually, he met a woman named Hope, in 2014, and his whole life changed. Hope brought hope to the broomed away(swept astray) Broome.
For the first time, he attended church with Hope (interestingly, to “Hope” Church) and the pastor’s message was about forgiveness and restoration.
Broome started attending church with her and studied Biblical theology before marrying Hope in 2016. Now, they’re loving parents with three kids.
Broome is currently a pastor at the Good News Baptist Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and also teaches and preaches around the country.
He also boasts a podcast and a popular Instagram page with over 50,000 followers.
Joshua Broome’s story of hope, transformation and rising up from the ashes has inspired millions of people around the globe.
