Ghana’s Top 11 Diseases that Caused Death in 2022 Revealed

In a recent report released by the statistical report of the Births and Deaths Registry in Ghana,18,689 deaths, accounting for 36.7% of registered deaths (50,992), were in connection to the top 11 causes of mortality in the country. This sheds light on the prevalent health challenges facing Ghanaian citizens. 

At the forefront of the mortality list was hypertension, with 2,573 individuals succumbing to its effects. Close behind were pneumonia (2,457), heart failure (2,225), acute respiratory failure (2,203), stroke (1,679), diabetes (1,578), severe sepsis (1,558), septic shock (1,401), chronic liver disease (1,103), cancer (1,036), and cerebrovascular diseases (876).

1. Hypertension: High blood pressure continues to be a significant health concern, contributing to a considerable number of deaths across the country.

2. Pneumonia: Respiratory infections, particularly pneumonia, remain a leading cause of mortality, especially among vulnerable populations such as children and the elderly.

3. Heart Failure: Heart-related ailments, including heart failure, pose a significant threat to public health, highlighting the importance of cardiovascular care and prevention measures.

4. Acute Respiratory Failure: Respiratory disorders, including acute respiratory failure, underscore the need for improved access to quality healthcare and respiratory support services.

5. Stroke: Cerebrovascular diseases, such as stroke, continue to be a major cause of disability and death in Ghana, emphasizing the importance of stroke prevention and management strategies.

6. Diabetes: The prevalence of diabetes and its complications, including diabetic emergencies, remains a critical public health challenge requiring comprehensive interventions.

7. Severe Sepsis: Sepsis, a life-threatening condition triggered by infection, underscores the importance of early detection and prompt medical intervention to prevent fatalities.

8. Septic Shock: Septic shock, a severe form of sepsis characterized by dangerously low blood pressure, highlights the need for effective infection control measures and critical care management.

9. Chronic Liver Disease: Liver disorders, including chronic liver disease, present significant health burdens, necessitating efforts to enhance liver health awareness and access to liver care services.

10. Cancer: Despite advancements in cancer treatment, cancer remains a leading cause of death in Ghana, emphasizing the importance of cancer prevention, early detection, and access to quality oncology services.

11. Cerebrovascular Diseases: Apart from stroke, other cerebrovascular diseases contribute to the country’s mortality burden, highlighting the need for comprehensive stroke care and neurology services.

The findings from this report underscore the urgent need for targeted public health interventions and healthcare policies aimed at addressing these prevalent diseases and reducing their impact on Ghanaian communities. Efforts to improve access to quality healthcare, promote preventive measures, and strengthen healthcare infrastructure are crucial in combating these deadly diseases and improving the overall health and well-being of the population.
