Kasoa—Joshua Adu Guni, a part-time teacher from Kasoa, is reaching out for help after losing GHc15,000 intended for his father’s medical treatment to sports betting. Guni has admitted to a serious gambling addiction and is asking the public for support to enter a rehabilitation program.
Guni, who began betting in 2019, saw his addiction worsen in 2020 following an introduction to roulette by a friend. “My friend didn’t exactly teach me but used my phone to place bets and gave me money when he won, which sparked my interest,” Guni told Onua Online.
In addition to the substantial loss of GHc15,000, Guni revealed that his gambling problems have caused rifts with his family. He lost GHc7,000 that belonged to his uncle, money he obtained from selling plumbing materials. He also owes his mother GHc5,000 after gambling away funds she had given him.
“I will be very happy if someone wants to help me,” Guni said. “If there is a rehab, and someone wants to take me there, I am fully committed. Even if it’s right now, I am ready to stop.”
Guni’s case highlights the severe impact of gambling addiction and underscores the urgent need for effective support and rehabilitation services for those affected.
