Ghanaian music sensation Eugene Marfo, popularly known as Kuami Eugene, has opened up about a pivotal moment in his journey to stardom—a 2016 trip to the Volta Region that he says changed everything.
Speaking in an interview with media personality Doreen Avio on her YouTube show, the former Lynx Entertainment signee reflected on his early struggles as a budding musician. The conversation, held in Kuami Eugene’s private studio, offered a glimpse into the challenges he faced before his rise to fame.
He credited the church as his first musical training ground. It was there, he explained, that he learned to play multiple instruments and developed the foundational skills that shaped his artistry. However, he admitted that despite the spiritual and creative growth, the financial rewards were meager.
“People in the church appreciated my gift and often invited me to play at private events,” he said. “But at the end of the day, I barely made enough for transportation or a decent meal.”
According to Kuami Eugene, everything began to shift after he took an unplanned trip to the Volta Region with a friend in 2016. Though he did not disclose the exact purpose of the visit, he believes it was a divine turning point in his life.
Upon returning to Accra, he auditioned for the MTN Hitmaker reality show. Kuami Eugene eventually placed third in the competition, a breakthrough that led to his signing with Lynx Entertainment.
His career took off rapidly from there. In his first year with the label, he won the Unsung Artiste of the Year award at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA). He followed that up with the New Artiste of the Year title, and in a remarkable third year, he clinched the coveted Artiste of the Year award.
Reflecting on his journey, Kuami Eugene remains convinced that the trip to Volta was a crucial moment that set the stage for everything that followed.
