MTN Group has confirmed that it was hit by a cyberattack, which led to unauthorized access to some customer data in a few of the countries where it operates.
In a statement on April 24, 2025, the telecom company said an unknown third party broke into parts of its systems. However, MTN assured customers that its core systems—like mobile money, billing, and financial services—were not affected.
“There is no evidence that customers’ accounts or MoMo wallets were directly compromised,” MTN said.
The company has activated its cybersecurity measures and alerted law enforcement agencies, including South African authorities. MTN is also working with officials in affected countries and is notifying impacted customers as required by law.
Customers are advised to stay alert, avoid sharing personal information, use strong passwords, and enable two-factor authentication where possible.
MTN stressed its commitment to protecting customer data and maintaining transparency as the investigation continues.
