Accra, Ghana – July 11, 2025: The Ghana Police Service has confirmed the interdiction of a police officer captured in a viral video assaulting a journalist during the parliamentary election rerun at the Ablekuma North constituency.
The officer, identified as Officer Dwomor, was seen in the footage physically confronting Agyekum Banahene, a reporter with GHOne TV and the EIB Network. According to Banahene, the assault occurred while he was seated at the polling station to monitor and report on the electoral process.
“I was sitting down behind the station monitoring the elections when a police officer approached me and asked me to leave. I explained that I’m a media person and showed him my press tag, but he insisted and started pushing me. When I resisted and explained again, he slapped me,” Banahene recounted shortly after the incident.
In an official statement issued by the Police and signed by Assistant Superintendent of Police Richmond Mensah for the Director of Public Affairs, the Service said:
“The Ghana Police Service has monitored a viral video in which one of our officers is seen assaulting a reporter. The officer concerned has been withdrawn from the ongoing election duty at Ablekuma North; and in line with internal disciplinary procedures, he has been interdicted and referred to the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) for investigation.”
The Police further assured the public that a thorough investigation will be conducted, with updates to be communicated in due course.
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation from the media fraternity and the public, with calls for accountability and better protection for journalists covering national events.
The Ghana Journalists Association is expected to issue a statement in response to the assault as the matter continues to draw national attention.
