President John Dramani Mahama has declared Friday, July 4, 2025, as a public holiday in observance of Republic Day, which falls on Tuesday, July 1. This decision is in line with the government’s policy of shifting midweek public holidays to Fridays to promote long weekends and encourage productivity.
In a statement released on Thursday night, the Ministry of the Interior announced that the President, through an Executive Instrument (E.I.), has made the declaration pursuant to Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act, 2021 (Act 601).
“The general public is hereby informed that Tuesday, 1st July 2025, is Republic Day,” the statement read.
“However, His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Ghana, by Executive Instrument (E.I.), in accordance with Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act, 2021 (Act 601), has declared Friday, 4th July 2025, as a public holiday.”
Republic Day marks the day in 1960 when Ghana became a republic under its own constitution, transitioning from a British dominion to full sovereignty. Though it is no longer a statutory holiday, it is commemorated nationally and often recognized with official events and civic reflections.
This year’s adjustment means that there will be no public holiday on Tuesday, July 1, and Friday, July 4, will instead be observed nationwide as the official day off.
The Ministry has encouraged all Ghanaians to take note and plan accordingly.
