GNFS Contain Fire at Oyoko Methodist SHS in Koforidua
What could have turned into a devastating tragedy was averted on Tuesday evening, August 5, 2025, thanks to the swift response of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), who successfully contained a fire outbreak at the Oyoko Methodist Senior High School in Koforidua.
The fire broke out at the housemaster’s residence, tearing through the roof, ceiling, and everything in its path—from furniture to electrical appliances and personal items. But amidst the chaos and rising flames, there was a sigh of relief—no one was hurt.
According to a GNFS report, the emergency call came in at exactly 6:24 PM. Within ten minutes, the first of two fire engines arrived on the scene. Firefighters battled the blaze for nearly two hours, bringing it under control by 7:24 PM and fully extinguishing it at 8:29 PM.
Thanks to the firefighters’ skill and urgency, the nearby boys’ dormitory—which was at serious risk—was completely saved from the fire’s reach. This swift action helped prevent the situation from escalating into a full-blown school disaster.
While the cause of the fire has not been officially confirmed, early investigations point to an electrical fault within the ceiling of the housemaster’s residence.
This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of regular maintenance and fire safety awareness in our schools. But above all, it highlights the incredible work our emergency services continue to do quietly every day.
Kudos to the GNFS team for their bravery, quick thinking, and commitment to protecting lives and property.
