At least 48 people have lost their lives in a tragic accident in Niger State, central Nigeria, after a fuel tanker collided with a lorry carrying passengers and cattle. The collision, which occurred around 00:30 local time (01:30 GMT) on Sunday, resulted in a deadly explosion that engulfed both vehicles, according to the Niger State Emergency Management Agency.
According to BBC news, Director-General Abdullahi Baba-arah confirmed that emergency response teams were immediately dispatched to the scene to manage the situation. In addition to the two vehicles involved, several other nearby vehicles were caught up in the explosion.
Footage from the aftermath shows the two vehicles completely burnt out, with the charred remains of several cattle scattered around the scene. Emergency workers have been working to recover the bodies of victims and animals trapped inside the vehicles.
Local reports indicate that a mass burial is currently underway for those who perished in the incident. Governor Umaru Bago expressed his condolences to the victims’ families, stating he was deeply “pained by the unfortunate incident.”
