The Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, has warned cattle owners and street traders that new rules are coming to keep the city clean and organized.
At a press meeting on Monday, April 14, he said that starting May 1, any cows found roaming around Kumasi will be caught, killed, and the meat will be given to inmates at the Kumasi Central Prison.
“If your cows wander into the city, they will be slaughtered and sent to feed prisoners,” the Mayor said, especially warning those with cows near the road from the airport to the Manhyia Palace.
He said he is upset that visitors coming to Kumasi see cow dung along important roads, which gives the city a bad image.
“I can’t allow visitors to come and see cow faeces from the airport to Manhyia,” he said.
This action is part of a larger plan to fix the ongoing problem of stray animals in Kumasi, which many people have complained about.
The Mayor also gave a two-week warning to traders selling goods on pavements and roadsides in the city center. Starting Wednesday, April 16, the city will start clearing them out to make room for pedestrians.
He warned that any trader who refuses to leave might face strong punishment, even including being physically removed or beaten.
