Mrs. Oluwatosin Aina, a dedicated Christian Religious Knowledge teacher at Olokinne High School in Ojowo, Ijebu Igbo, Ogun State, reportedly collapsed and died on Thursday morning, leaving the school community in deep mourning.
The late Aina, a Grade Level 14 officer, drove herself to the school but began feeling unwell shortly after arriving. Seeking permission from the Principal to attend to her health, she tragically slumped beside her car. Rushed to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital annex in Ijebu Igbo, she was confirmed dead.
The news has sent shockwaves through the school, as Mrs. Aina was known for her dedication and love for both students and colleagues. The teacher, in her 50s and married to a retired Principal in Ijebu Igbo, had been a respected figure in the community.
Expressing concern over the alarming rate of teacher deaths in the state, an anonymous teacher in the area highlighted the toll the stress of a limited number of educators is taking on their health. The Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools, Ogun State, Felix Agbesanwa, acknowledged the teacher shortage challenge and welcomed recent government efforts to employ 2000 teachers, along with permanent positions for 1000 OgunTeach interns.
While commiserating with the bereaved family, Agbesanwa expressed hope that the government would continue addressing issues affecting teachers’ well-being, as promised by the Governor. The tragic incident serves as a somber reminder of the challenges faced by educators and the urgent need for adequate support in the education sector.
