Ho-Bankoe, a bustling hub in the heart of the Volta Regional capital, was plunged into chaos on Monday (October 2) when an articulated tipper truck, heavily laden with sand, careened down Galenku Hill, per graphic reports.
The truck, bearing registration number GX 3734 – 18, blared its horn frantically, alerting nearby vehicles to the impending catastrophe. Quick-thinking occupants managed to evacuate their vehicles, narrowly escaping the impending disaster, as the truck plowed into nine vehicles and a motorbike on Independence Avenue before colliding with an electricity pole.
The collision sent cars scattering in all directions, igniting pandemonium among bystanders. Swift response from the Ghana Police Service, National Ambulance Service, National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and the Ghana National Fire Service helped mitigate the aftermath of the calamity. At approximately 1pm, emergency personnel arrived at the scene, working tirelessly to aid the injured and clear the wreckage.
One woman, among those involved, sustained injuries and was promptly rushed to the hospital for medical attention. Preliminary reports suggest that the brake system of the tipper truck failed, leading to the catastrophic descent down the hill.
As of Tuesday morning, a spokesperson for the Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service confirmed that there were no reported fatalities resulting from the incident. The affected stretch of road, which remained impassable for several hours, has since been reopened to traffic.
