A bus carrying Easter worshipers plunged off a cliff, resulting in the loss of 45 lives. The tragic incident occurred on Thursday, sending shockwaves through the region of Limpopo province, South Africa
According to reports from the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), the bus was en route to the Zion Christian Church in Moria for an Easter conference when it met with the fatal accident. Among the passengers were pilgrims traveling from Gaborone, the capital city of neighboring Botswana.
The crash unfolded in the treacherous terrain of the Mamatlakala mountain pass between Mokopane and Marken, where the bus reportedly caught fire upon impact. Efforts to determine the cause of the accident are underway, with authorities investigating the possibility of the driver losing control.
In a statement issued by the province’s transport department, details emerged of the harrowing scene at the crash site. Bodies were found scattered amidst the wreckage, with some burned beyond recognition. Recovery operations have been challenging, with only 12 bodies retrieved thus far.
Florence Radzilani, a member of the province’s Executive Council for Transport and Community Safety, described the grim situation upon her arrival at the scene. Despite the challenges, officials have been tirelessly working to recover the victims and provide support to their families.
The sole survivor, an eight-year-old girl, sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention. Plans are in place to repatriate the deceased to Botswana, as announced by South African Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga.
Expressions of sympathy and solidarity have poured in from both local and national leaders. President Cyril Ramaphosa extended his condolences to the government of Botswana and the families affected by the tragedy. He emphasized the importance of responsible driving, particularly during the busy Easter weekend when many people are on the roads.
