Sports Minister, Mustapha Ussif has revealed that Ghana spent less money than budgeted for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
According to Honourable Ussif, Ghana budgeted an amount of $8.1 million but spent only $5,171, 840”, which was almost $3 million below expectations.
“Mr. Speaker, our total expenditure for the group stage participation amounted to $5,171, 840.” — he said.
The youth and Sports Minister gave details of the expenses at the Qatar World Cup to enhance understanding and clear doubts.
“These expenditures covered appearance free, per diem, flight arrangements, medicals, equipment logistics, and hospitality.”
There were surplus of approximately $3 million because of Ghana’s unfortunate exit from the tournament after playing Uruguay in last group match. Mr. Ussif further told the speaker that the sports ministry was strategic enough in paying bonuses to players which also contributed to the said expenditure.
“Mr. Speaker the reason for the surplus of $3 million after our exit from the group stage is the result of the ministry’s prudent management of resources as well as the ministry’s decision to negotiate on qualification bonus for the next round instead of paying winning bonuses per match.”
“What this means is that in spite of our black stars defeating South Korea in our second group match we did not pay any winning bonus for that game”.
FIFA will hand and amount of $10.5 million to Ghana as participation fee. After striking the differences ($10,500,000- $5,171, 840), Ghana will get a total of $5,328,160 as profit after exiting from the group stage.
