Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, the former New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart and current leader of the Movement for Change, has unveiled a significant policy proposal aimed at improving family welfare in Ghana.
In a recent social media announcement, Kyerematen detailed his plans to extend maternity leave and introduce paternity leave if elected President in the 2024 general election.
Kyerematen, who is running as an independent candidate after leaving the NPP last year, pledged to amend the Labour Amendment Bill to extend maternity leave from the current 12 weeks to 24 weeks with full pay. Additionally, he proposed an option for an additional 12 weeks of unpaid maternity leave. This move aims to align Ghana’s policies with international standards, particularly the ILO Maternity Protection Convention 1952.
In a groundbreaking step, Kyerematen also promised to introduce 12 weeks of paternity leave, a first for Ghana. He believes these changes will not only support families but also enhance the overall quality of life and reduce socioeconomic disparities across the country.
Kyerematen, who served as Minister of Trade and Industry in two non-consecutive terms, emphasized that his policy proposals are part of a broader vision encapsulated in his “Great Transformational Plan (GTP).” Launched on June 24, 2024, the GTP outlines a comprehensive strategy for Ghana’s economic transformation, aiming to build a prosperous and equitable nation.
