In an incident in Walewale, July 30, 2024 on Wednesday evening, Abubakari Mohammed Awal, a 37-year-old mobile money vendor, was shot in the legs by armed robbers who made off with over GHC40,000, five mobile phones, and a merchant SIM.
According to Asaase radio’s report, the attack occurred between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. at Awal’s residence in Walewale, North East Region. According to Awal, he was ambushed by three armed men as he approached his home. The robbers began their assault by shooting at the tyres of his motorbike, causing him to nearly fall.
“The robbers were hiding in an uncompleted building near my house,” Awal recounted. “They instructed one of their group to shoot me in the head, but he was overruled. Instead, they shot me in the legs.” In the ensuing chaos, Awal was forced to abandon his motorbike, which contained his bag, two smartphones, three yam phones, and more than GHC40,000.
Awal is currently receiving treatment at the Walewale Municipal Hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.
This incident follows another robbery in Walewale on July 14, where a mobile money vendor named Mba Saaka was attacked in his home. The robbers in that case stole over GHC300,000 and multiple phones, raising concerns about escalating crime in the region.
