The Government of Ghana is set to expand the Free Senior High School (SHS) programme to include private SHSs, beginning in the 2025/2026 academic year. Under this pilot initiative, the government will pay GH¢1,500 per term for each student placed in a participating private school.
The Ghana National Council for Private Schools (GNACOPS) confirmed the development during an interview on TV3’s Hot Issues on Sunday, June 1. According to GNACOPS Executive Director, Enoch Nana Gyetuah, the move is part of a strategic partnership to reduce pressure on public schools while improving access to quality education.
Private SHSs have already submitted available spaces to the Ministry of Education. Student placement will be based on each school’s capacity to ensure a smooth teaching and learning experience.
Mr. Gyetuah described the initiative as mutually beneficial, adding that private school owners are enthusiastic about the opportunity.
“This is a very attractive arrangement, and private school owners are happy to be part of it,” he said.
