Black Stars forward Raphael Dwamena has passed away at the age of 28. The heartbreaking news was confirmed by Citi Sports after Dwamena collapsed on the football pitch during a game between his Albanian side Egnatia Rrogozhine and Partizani.
The tragic incident occurred in the 23rd minute of the Superliga Match Day 13 matchup, leading to the suspension of the game. Dwamena, who had been diagnosed with a heart condition in 2017, experienced a cardiac arrest despite having an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) to monitor his heart rate since 2020 during his time with Spanish side Levante.
This isn’t the first time Dwamena faced such a health scare. In October 2021, he suffered a relapse during a game in the Austrian League, collapsing on the pitch. Fortunately, he was quickly stabilized, survived, and later released by the club. His heart condition played a crucial role in the breakdown of a move to Danish Superliga side Velje Boldklub, as the club’s sporting director expressed concern over Dwamena’s heart measurement.
Despite his health challenges, Dwamena had shown promise in his football career. He was part of a 30-man Black Stars squad for the 2017 AFCON competition, although he missed out on the final 23-man squad. Dwamena made his mark on the international stage by scoring on his debut during a 2017 AFCON qualifier against Ethiopia under the management of Kwasi Appiah.
The football community mourns the loss of a talented player whose career was tragically cut short by health complications. Our thoughts and condolences go out to Raphael Dwamena’s family, friends, and fans during this difficult time.
