A devastating fire outbreak engulfed Kantamanto Market in the early hours of January 2, 2025, destroying numerous shops and leaving traders in despair. The blaze, which started around 1:00 am, required the intervention of 13 fire appliances to bring it under control.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) initially dispatched five fire engines from Makola, Greater Accra Regional Headquarters, National Headquarters, Flagstaff House, and Parliament House. However, the intensity of the fire necessitated reinforcements from Circle, Trade Fair, Dansoman, Abelenkpe, Kasapreko, Tema Regional Headquarters, Madina, and Legon Fire Stations.
To aid firefighting efforts, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) was called upon to cut power to the area, ensuring the safety of firefighters and reducing the risk of electrocution.
Many traders, overwhelmed by the destruction of their goods and cash, collapsed at the scene. One distraught woman, who reportedly left 200,000 Ghana cedis in her shop, was rushed to the hospital for emergency care. Complaints from traders suggest that many do not deposit their money in banks, leaving their livelihoods vulnerable to such disasters.
Eyewitnesses and traders have raised concerns about the recurring nature of these fires, especially at the beginning of the year, fueling speculation of possible foul play. Authorities are expected to investigate the cause of the fire to prevent future occurrences.

Meanwhile, the GNFS has reiterated the need for market traders to adopt fire safety measures, including the installation of fire extinguishers and regular electrical inspections.
This latest tragedy has once again highlighted the urgent need for enhanced fire safety protocols in Ghana’s busy markets, where similar incidents have left countless traders devastated over the years.
