The Ho Chi Minh City court sentenced Truong My Lan, a prominent figure in Vietnam’s real estate and banking sectors, to death for her involvement in one of the country’s largest financial fraud cases. Truong My Lan, 67, served as the chair of the real estate company Van Thinh Phat and was found guilty of orchestrating a complex scheme amounting to $12.5 billion in fraud, nearly 3% of Vietnam’s 2022 GDP.
Lan’s illicit activities extended to her control over Saigon Joint Stock Commercial Bank from 2012 to 2022, during which she approved over 2,500 loans resulting in staggering losses of $27 billion for the bank. Despite Lan’s participation in charity activities and being a first-time offender, the court attributed its harsh sentence to the seriousness of the case, emphasizing Lan’s role in an orchestrated criminal enterprise with no possibility of the money being recovered.
Truong Hue Van, Lan’s niece and the chief executive of Van Thinh Phat, was sentenced to 17 years in prison for aiding her aunt, while Lan’s husband, Eric Chu Nap-kee, received a nine-year prison term. The court found Lan guilty of using her influence to tap into Saigon Joint Stock Commercial Bank for personal gain, indirectly owning more than 90% of the bank and approving thousands of loans to fictitious entities.
Former central bank official Do Thi Nhan was also implicated in the case and sentenced to life in prison for accepting $5.2 million in bribes. Lan’s arrest in October 2022 was part of Vietnam’s ongoing anti-corruption drive, known as the Blazing Furnace campaign, which has targeted high-profile individuals across various sectors of Vietnamese politics and business.
Analysts have expressed concerns about the impact of Lan’s case on Vietnam’s economy, particularly in the real estate sector. With over 1,300 property firms withdrawing from the market in 2023 and rental prices plummeting in major cities like Ho Chi Minh City, the repercussions of Lan’s actions are expected to be felt for years to come. Despite these challenges, Communist Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong reaffirmed Vietnam’s commitment to combating corruption, emphasizing that the fight would “continue for the long haul.”
Truong My Lan’s sentencing serves as a significant milestone in Vietnam’s efforts to root out corruption and restore trust in its financial institutions, signaling a strong message to individuals who seek to exploit their positions for personal gain.
