In a recent announcement via Twitter on Wednesday, former President John Dramani Mahama, the flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), pledged to initiate the payment of allowances to assembly members if he is elected as President in 2024.

Having actively participated in the district-level elections at the Bole District Assembly polling station on Tuesday, December 20, 2023, Mahama congratulated all those involved in the electoral process. His tweet conveyed a strong message emphasizing the collective responsibility to ensure the success of decentralization.

The former President stated, “I remain committed. When voted as the President of Ghana in 2024, I will begin paying allowances to all assembly members to help them carry out their duties.” Mahama highlighted the significance of these allowances, aiming to support assembly members in fulfilling their local responsibilities effectively.

The commitment extends beyond financial support, as Mahama expressed a vision for fostering local economic growth. He emphasized the collaborative effort needed to build robust local economies that operate around the clock, ultimately generating well-paying job opportunities.

As the 2024 presidential elections draw near, Mahama’s promise to prioritize the welfare of assembly members has become a focal point, sparking discussions about the potential impact on local governance and community development.

Full statement below:

“I exercised my civic responsibility as a Ghanaian by voting in Tuesday’s district-level elections at the Bole District Assembly polling station.

Congratulations to all who participated in the exercise. And to our newly elected Assembly Members across the country, let me remind you that we all have a responsibility to contribute and ensure that we get our decentralisation right.
