Tragedy struck this morning in the Ashanti Region as a saloon car carrying five individuals veered off the road and plunged into the Owabi River near Dabaah in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District. The incident, which occurred around 6 a.m., has left four feared dead, while one person remains unaccounted for.
According to eyewitnesses, the vehicle was en route to Akropong from Darbaa when the driver lost control, causing it to skid off the road and crash into the river. The passengers included the driver, her two children, and two male adults – a teacher and a plumber – who were reportedly given a lift.
Emergency services arrived on the scene and began recovery efforts, though they faced significant challenges due to the river’s depth and swift currents. As of now, authorities have yet to retrieve the fifth victim and the vehicle from the river.
The identities of the victims have not been disclosed, though the two adult males have been identified as a teacher and a plumber. Authorities are working to inform the families of the deceased and missing, and further investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the accident.
This incident marks a heartbreaking moment for the local community, as the Owabi River has seen several tragic incidents in recent years. Local leaders are urging caution along this route, especially given the early morning fog and narrow road conditions often found in the area.
Updates on the situation are expected as emergency crews continue their search and recovery operation.
