Ghanaian Blogger Bongo Ideas Expresses Safety Concerns, Considers Relocating to USA
Ghanaian social media influencer and blogger, Albert Nat Hyde, popularly known as Bongo Ideas, has voiced concerns about his safety in Ghana following a harrowing encounter with armed men posing as national security operatives.
In an exclusive interview on Captain Smart’s morning show on Onua TV on Wednesday March 3, 2024 , Bongo Ideas recounted his ordeal, revealing that he was forcibly taken from his home on March 14, 2024, and subjected to threats and physical assault.
According to Bongo Ideas, the armed men, who raided his residence, warned him against discussing political topics related to the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and President Nana Addo Dankwah Akuffo-Addo. He added that they changed his email and social media account passwords, further heightening his fears for his safety.
During the interview, Captain Smart suggested potential countries for relocation after Bongo talked about his intentions to leave Ghana; Bongo Ideas expressed his desire to move to the United States. Bongo cited a need for a conducive environment where he can freely express his opinions without facing intimidation or violence and USA stands tall as compared to other countries.
Bongo further said in the interview that he has written letters to the ECOWAS, African Union (AU), United Nations (UN) and other international organizations on his safety concerns but he is yet to receive any response from them.
Bongo’s capture occurred just a day after he posted on social media about President Akuffo-Addo, sparking speculation about possible motives behind his abduction. Despite his prominence in the Ghanaian digital landscape for his controversial content and social commentary, Bongo Ideas has remained partially silent on the incident and the swirling rumours, and on certain issues he is usually expected to comment on.
As investigations into the incident continue, Bongo Ideas’ plight serves as a stark reminder of freedom of speech and how one should be mindful of expressing himself and most importantly, the challenges faced by those speaking out against political powers in the country.
