In a bold and confident address, President John Dramani Mahama has dismissed claims made by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) that his return to power would usher in another era of “dumsor” (persistent power outages). Speaking on the issue, President Mahama criticized the NPP for spreading fear among Ghanaians, stating, “I wonder why the NPP could say with confidence that you voted for Mahama, so dumsor is coming back. Of course, they must have known that they didn’t have enough fuel stock. But I can assure them that the first trap they set for us, we SHALL avoid it.”
The President made these remarks at the Annual National Convention of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission Ghana, also known as the Jalsa Salana, held at the Mission’s Farms in Gomoa Pomadze, near Winneba Junction.
President Mahama, who was elected as President of the Republic of Ghana in the general election held on December 7, 2024, and sworn in on January 7, 2025, is already setting the tone for his administration. Addressing the challenges inherited from the previous government, he expressed determination to navigate Ghana through any potential crises while ensuring stability and growth.
Key Ministerial Appointments
Since assuming office, President Mahama has moved swiftly to form his government, announcing three critical ministerial nominations. In accordance with Article 78 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, he has submitted the following names to the Speaker of Parliament:
1. Hon. Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson – Minister for Finance Designate
2. Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor – Minister for Energy Designate
3. Hon. Dominic Akuritinga Ayini – Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Designate
These nominations reflect President Mahama’s focus on addressing the economic, energy, and legal challenges facing the nation. Dr. Forson, a renowned economist and former Deputy Finance Minister, is expected to spearhead policies aimed at revitalizing the economy. Meanwhile, Hon. Jinapor, known for his deep understanding of the energy sector, will work to stabilize Ghana’s power supply and eliminate fears of dumsor. Hon. Ayini, an experienced legal mind, will oversee justice and constitutional affairs.
A Clear Vision for the Future
President Mahama’s statement signals his resolve to address the energy and fuel challenges inherited from the previous administration while avoiding pitfalls that could derail progress. As Ghanaians look forward to the new administration’s agenda, the President’s leadership style and ministerial choices suggest a focus on competence, resilience, and sustainable development.
