Former president of the Republic of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama has posted on his social media pages beseeching the current administration to halt or desist from using monies from national coffers to complete building Cathedral for the country.
Even though he is a Christian and deeply appreciates the “centrality” of God in everything, he believes the project can not be continued at a time the country is in economic crisis. To Mr. Mahama, stabilizing the economy is dire and needs to be prioritized instead of building a cathedral.
“The public funding of the national cathedral, particularly at this time, must stop. Being a Christian myself, and deeply appreciative of the centrality of God in nation building, I agree with most Ghanaians who believe that the project cannot constitute a top priority of government at this moment, warranting further injection of scarce public funds” — John Mahama wrote.
The presidential candidate for National Democratic Congress for 2024 elections (hopeful), Mr. Mahama added president Akuffo-Addo and his government are not transparent of the “procurement” of materials for the project and should be open to auditing. Openness could motivate believers to contribute towards the construction of the house of God.
“Because of the non-transparency of the processes and procurements associated with the project, I believe that the cathedral project should be subjected to a value for money audit in order to open the way for believers who wish to contribute to its construction to do so” — he added.
After completion, Ghana’s National Cathedral is to host national events like state funerals and presidential inaugural services.
