NDC’s Mustapha Gbande Advocates Unconventional Approach for 2024 Elections
Mustafa Gbande, the deputy general secretary of Ghana’s National Democratic Congress (NDC), has urged voters to carry cutlasses when heading to the polls for the upcoming 2024 general elections. Gbande’s unconventional advice, delivered on Okay FM, emphasized the need for voters to arm themselves as a pre-emptive measure against potential misconduct by the rival New Patriotic Party (NPP).
During the radio interview, Gbande stated, “I have told the leadership of the NDC that we have to prepare in advance for the NPP ahead of the elections. When we are going to the polling station, let’s carry with us cutlasses. If we do, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will not be able to misbehave toward us.”
The host of the show, Kwame Nkrumah Tikese, pressed Gbande to justify his call for voters to resort to violence. In response, Gbande reiterated that, from the NDC’s perspective, arming themselves is seen as the only way to ensure a free and fair election. Despite concerns about the potential repercussions of such a suggestion, Gbande stood firm on the party’s stance.
As Ghana approaches the 2024 elections, Gbande’s unusual advice has sparked debates on the appropriateness of such tactics in a democratic process. It remains to be seen how this call to arms will influence public opinion and whether it will lead to a shift in the dynamics of the political landscape as the election date draws nearer.
