Tragic Drowning of Twin Toddlers Highlights Ongoing Danger of Abandoned Galamsey Pits
Two-and-a-half-year-old twins, a boy and a girl, tragically drowned on Thursday after falling into an abandoned galamsey pit filled with water.
The incident took place in Morkwaa, a farming community near Twifo Praso in the Twifo Atti-Morkwa District of the Central Region. This marks the eighth fatality this year linked to uncovered galamsey pits in the district, as reported by local residents.
Mr. George Sam, the Assembly Member for the Morkwa Electoral Area, confirmed the tragedy to the Ghana News Agency. According to Mr. Sam, the twins’ mother, who was unwell, fell asleep while the children were playing outside. When she awoke and found them missing, she searched the house but could not locate them. Her search ended in heartbreak when she discovered the children’s bodies in the neglected galamsey pit near her home.
The police have launched an investigation, and the twins’ bodies have been taken to the Twifo-Praso Government Hospital morgue. Residents have expressed frustration over the numerous exposed galamsey pits in their community and have called on the Assembly to address the issue by reclaiming the land to prevent future tragedies.
