Award-winning dancehall artist Stonebwoy has been dropped from the lineup of performers for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Victory Concert. The much-anticipated event is set to take place at the forecourt of the Legon Stadium on Sunday, January 5.
The initial promotional flyers released yesterday featured Stonebwoy alongside a star-studded lineup, including Edem, D-Flex, Jack Alolomi, Ohemaa Mercy, and other notable artistes. However, within hours, a social media campaign under the hashtag #DropStonebwoy gained traction, calling for the removal of the reigning TGMA Artiste of the Year from the bill.
The Grassroots’ Demand
The campaign, seemingly driven by NDC grassroots supporters, questioned Stonebwoy’s inclusion, given his refusal to align with any political party during the 2024 general elections. Many argued that artistes who openly supported the party, such as Nacee and Mzbel, deserved a spot on the lineup instead.
Further complicating matters, a faction of supporters proposed Shatta Wale as a more suitable replacement, citing his rumored support for the NDC during the election campaign.
Stonebwoy’s Neutral Stance
Stonebwoy’s neutral position on political matters appears to have fueled the backlash. Before the elections, the artist publicly declined an invitation from the NDC to perform at their final rally, stating his desire to remain apolitical.
Critics used his decision to argue against his participation in the Victory Concert, stating, “If Stonebwoy didn’t want to associate with the party before the elections, he shouldn’t be part of the celebration either.”
Shatta Wale as a Replacement?
While Shatta Wale’s name has been floated as a potential replacement, the debate remains contentious. Some NDC supporters and Stonebwoy fans argue that the latter’s absence from political platforms, including those of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), makes him a neutral figure, not an adversary to the NDC.
Organisers Respond
Acknowledging the public sentiment, the organisers released a statement confirming Stonebwoy’s removal.
“The organisers of the Ghana Victory Party, responding to public sentiments and concerns from the party’s grassroots regarding Stonebwoy’s inclusion, have decided to remove the artist from the concert lineup,” the statement read.
While Shatta Wale’s potential inclusion remains unconfirmed, the organisers emphasized their commitment to creating a lineup that resonates with their supporters.
What’s Next?
As the controversy unfolds, the focus now shifts to whether Shatta Wale will officially join the concert. With just days to go, the organisers face mounting pressure to satisfy their grassroots while maintaining a celebratory atmosphere.
For now, fans await further announcements as the countdown to the NDC Victory Concert continues.
