Bawumia Triumphs in NPP Primaries, Gears Up for Showdown in 2024 Elections
Accra, Ghana – November 4, 2023 – Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Assin Central Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong, the leading contenders in the recently concluded New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries, shared a handshake and laughter as the Electoral Commission (EC) confirmed Dr. Bawumia’s victory.
The Accra Sports Stadium served as the backdrop for the declaration of the final results, where Mr. Agyapong sat in close proximity to the Vice President, joined by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, First Lady Rebeccas Akufo-Addo, and Second Lady Samira Bawumia. Also present were General Secretary Justin Kodu Frimpong, as well as fellow contestants Francis Addai-Nimoh and Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia emerged victorious with an impressive 118,210 votes out of 193,346, claiming 61.47 percent of the total valid votes cast. Kennedy Agyapong, a formidable contender, secured 71,996 votes, representing 37.41 percent. Following were Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto with 1,459 votes (0.76 percent) and Francis Addai-Nimoh with 781 votes (0.41 percent).
In a spirited address, Kennedy Agyapong affirmed his support for Dr. Bawumia’s candidacy, declaring, “I pledge my support that we’re going to tirelessly work to break the 8. I believe the party has been fair and transparent. I must admit the election has been fair. I want to assure you that in 2024 the showdown is being transferred. We’re going to give the NDC a showdown.“
With this victory, Dr. Bawumia is poised to lead the ruling party into the upcoming 2024 elections, where his main challenger will be former president John Dramani Mahama, who secured the flagbearer position for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) last December.
This contest marks a pivotal moment in Ghana’s political landscape, as both candidates reprise their roles in a high-stakes faceoff. Their rivalry has spanned elections from 2008 to 2020, with Dr. Bawumia serving as a running mate to Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, while John Dramani Mahama led the NDC.
As the nation anticipates the 2024 elections, Ghana is on the brink of a historic showdown, with one candidate seeking a return to power, and the other aiming to ascend to the highest political office in the land. The outcome of this pivotal election is set to shape the course of Ghana’s political trajectory.
