A devastating fire at Atonsu Bokuro in the Asokwa Municipality of the Ashanti Region on Monday morning has claimed the life of a 17-year-old boy and left extensive damage to property.
The fire, which broke out just before 8 a.m., destroyed household items including LPG cylinders, ceiling fans, refrigerators, and clothing. Despite efforts to control the blaze, the charred remains of the teenager were discovered after the fire was extinguished.
Residents and personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) mobilized quickly to combat the fire. The Ashanti Regional Spokesperson for the Fire Service, DO2 Peter Addai, confirmed the tragic loss and detailed the operation’s efforts to contain the blaze.
“We promptly dispatched the fire tender from BOST, and upon arrival, the fire was already fully ablaze,” DO2 Addai told Asaase News. “While they worked to extinguish it, they called for backup, so we quickly sent the fire tender from Kumasi Metro to provide additional support.”
While the fire resulted in the loss of life and the destruction of personal belongings, firefighters managed to prevent the flames from spreading to neighboring buildings.
“Unfortunately, a 17-year-old boy lost his life in the incident,” DO2 Addai said. “However, we managed to save the adjoining buildings during our operations.”
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, and investigations are ongoing to ascertain what sparked the tragic incident.
This marks yet another fire-related tragedy in the Ashanti Region, raising concerns about fire safety measures and the preparedness of residents to respond to such emergencies.
Authorities have urged the public to exercise caution when using electrical appliances and handling flammable materials to prevent similar incidents.
