Over the years, the recurrent of flood in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana and its environs have been consistently persistent causing painful loss of lives, homes, properties and valuable assets. The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has expressed worry on the situation considering its extent in 2022.
NADMO has therefore asked for the legal power to take down unlawful structures in Ghana, especially in its capital city.
NADMO’s Deputy Director General has said the disaster which is both natural and humanly created can be curbed if the organization is given the mandate to properly scrutinize the unauthorized siting of various structures.
“Everything boils down to the assemblies. There are a number of illegal structures put up all over, but it is not the mandate of NADMO to demolish them. That is the problem we have” -Abu Ramadan, NADMO’s Deputy Director-General said on Citi TV‘s Face to Face program on Tuesday 24, May, 2022.
Mr. Abu Ramadan added local authorities have done little so time is due for NADMO to be given the power to execute the demolishing of unlawful structures.
“For us as a coordinating agency, there isn’t so much we can do. We can only advise or proffer solutions and facilitate. If the law has given us power to move an excavator to go and demolish buildings, I believe we would have done that”.
NADMO again mentioned filth as mother major cause of flood in Accra.,
“The bane of our problem is filth. Anytime it floods, it is always the fifth that has engulfed the drains. We need to find ways of dealing with the filth.”…. “But we are ready. Together with our collaborating agencies, we should be able to understand each other’s role in terms of preparations towards the floods and enforce our standard operating procedures”, – Abu Ramadan
